Changes from GPL Non-Commercial to GPL Commercial PDF Print E-mail

My decision to change PaymentsPlus from GPL Non-Commercial to GPL Commercial has not been taken likely, and I hope that current users can understand the necessity to change which I will try to explain here further.  Beware, that for current subscribers this change will have no effect until such time as their subscription falls due.

The decision really boils down to one of financial more than anything else. The component has simply got out of hand financially and I was faced with only two options.

Option 1. Cease development and only support the few current paid members til their subscription expires. This is something that I don't want to do, but the current business model is not working.  Time and expenses I've put into PaymentsPlus far outweigh the revenue received and as a result I'm finding it increasingly difficult to support my family. On average I assign over 35 hours per week to PaymentsPlus in support and development.

But the few sales I've had since releasing it in February 2009 equates to less than $1 USD per hour which is simply not enough to support my family.  At the time of writing this and since February 2009 when I first released PaymentsPlus as GPL Non-Commercial the component has been downloaded over 1000 times, of this there are over 300 sites using it and only 15 memberships have been purchased.

Too many of the free users still email me directly wanting support instead of using the general forums always with false promises of signing up for a support option, and then, stupid me in good faith answers them with what they need.  But alas, they continue to use but never follow through with their original intention and still expect ongoing free support for a component that lets face it - has the potential to make them money. One has to ask - it worth it?

OR

Option 2. Change my business model inline with others offering similar services (including Mosets), to make it fairer for everybody including myself and then continue to develop and support the project, but discontinue both free downloads and free support. Obviously, I've opted for option 2, so with that there will be several changes to the download and support system.

To view these changes I recommend viewing the new Membership Structure and also reading the new updated Terms of Service article.

I welcome public comment on this article,
